It is important to recognize the importance of logistics operations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the world. The overarching goal that all countries should work toward is represented by the 17 goals that the UN has suggested.
How can SDG be applied in logistics?
Sustainable Development Goals and objectives are closely related to logistics. Researching fresh approaches to problems in order to innovate and work with logistics entities and governments, today we are going to be talking about how logistics can help achieve some of these goals.
What is the Sustainable Development Goals SDG?
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) , or ODS, in 2015. In an effort to make the world better and more sustainable by the year 2030. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals :
1- No Poverty
It is the goal that aims is to end poverty in all of its forms worldwide. 13 indicators are used to track progress toward the goal’s 7 targets.
2- Zero Hunger
It is the goal to secure is food, and support sustainable agriculture. There are 8 targets and 14 indicators to track progress in this direction.
3- Good Health and Well-Being
It is the goal to ensure healthy lives and to promote well-being for everyone of all ages and it features 28 indicators and 13 milestones for tracking progress.
4- Quality Education
It is the goal to ensure all students have access to high-quality education and to encourage possibilities for lifelong learning, it 4 has ten targets which are measured by 11 indicators.
5- Gender Equality
It is the goal to achieve gender parity and give all women and girls more power.
6- Clean Water and Sanitation
It is the goal to make sure that everyone has access to clean water and is managed sustainably.
7- Affordable and Clean Energy
It is the goal to make ensuring that everyone has access to modern, affordable, dependable, and sustainable energy, it has 5 goals that must be met by 2030. 6 indicators are used to gauge success in achieving the goals.
8- Decent Work and Economic Growth
It is the goal to Support full and productive employment, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and decent work for all, it has a total of 12 goals that must be met by 2030.
9- Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
It is the goal to provide a robust infrastructure, advance inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and encourage innovation.
10- Reduced Inequalities
It is the goal to minimize wealth disparities within and between nations, by 2030, 10 goals are to be met.
11- Sustainable Cities and Communities
It is the goal to build inclusive, secure, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements.
12- Sustainable Consumption and Production
It is the goal to ensure sustainable patterns of production and consumption, it has 11 targets for Sustainable Development Goal
13 Climate Action
It is the goal to eliminate emissions and encourage the advancement of renewable energy, taking immediate action to address climate change and its effects.
14- Life Below Water
It is the goal to sustainable development, protect and responsibly use the oceans, seas, and marine resources.
15- Life on Land
It is the goal to Protect, restore, and foster sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, battle desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and promote biodiversity conservation.
16- Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

17- Partnerships for the Goals
It is the goal to intensify implementation strategies and reenergize the international collaboration for sustainable development.
How can Sustainable Development Goals
be applied in logistics?
- Working on reducing the waste generated from packing
Adopting the “logistics unverpackt,” method of packing in which internet delivery logistics emphasizes recycles packaging, and uses materials that is not harmful to the environment.
- Working on reducing carbon emissions reduction by adopting eco-friendly transportation.
The use of environmentally friendly forms of transportation vehicles like using electric delivery vehicles and maintaining ongoing research to provide truck and van load optimization solutions and effective driving techniques and choosing a better route.
- Make better use of container space.
By using better packing and sorting techniques we can make better use of container space, saving energy and effort to ship multiple containers.
How can we test if the logistics operation is according to the SDG?
There is an indicator that helps us test if the logistics operations are working according to the Sustainable Development Goals and it is called Logistics Performance Index (LPI). The Logistics Performance Index and the variables that affect it must be understood in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The Logistics Performance Index is primarily influenced by the following variables:
- The framework of trade and transportation.
- The standard of the main logistics processes.
- Having the capacity to follow shipments.
- The simplicity of organizing shipments at reasonable prices.
- The degree of border and customs clearance.
Logistics has a big role in preserving environmental sustainability, and on the other side of the coin, using sustainable ways helps logistics offer operational services more effectively while generating opportunities for cost savings and improvements in terms of logistical performance
